Title: Preamp suggestion
Post by: jasperdany on March 21, 2024, 09:19:36 PM
Hi,

My main instrument to record is Yamaha Genos, using my Tracking lunchbox Heritage Audio OST 8 ADAT, connected to audio interface Cranborne 500R8. From all my preamps when recording Piano, Epiano or Strings (orchestral strings like quartet and symphony), mp599 has the best sound while tracking, but I still hear a major difference between the sound through phones of Genos, than coming through preamp and Audio interface. Could I improve the sound if I use another preamp ? If yes, any suggestions. I am a newbie to this, so am not sure if am making the right call here.

Do you record with a mic or through the DI?

Do you compare the 2 through the same headphones?

Hi,

The line out from Genos goes directly to the DI input of mp599. Yes I use the same headphones to test both at phones output of Genos and 500R8 headphones output

This is weird because the MP599 is very transparent and there should be no difference.
Could it be possible that the Genos has some sort of speaker simulator on the phone output?
How would you describe this major difference?

Hey Jasper, I have the same Cranborne Setup you have. Was wondering if you experience the same "issue" I do with the Sound Skulptors I have running in the ADAT, I have to physically switch the link switch off and then on to link Pre-EQ-comp. Whereas, with the R8 the summing mixer seems to retain the setting when switched off and then back on. The ADAT seems to "turn off?
